Cillian is nominated again!

Cillian's recent performance of Misterman has not only been really well-received by the press, but also by the Drama Desk Awards' Nominating Committee. He has been nominated for Outstanding Solo Performance by the 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards. The Drama Desk Awards is based in New York and it honours theatrical productions on or off Broadway. The award presentation will be held at The Town Hall on 3rd June (Sunday) and we shall find out the results then!

Tickets are available here if you wish to go to the event.

Send Cillian your b-day wishes!

As you probably know, Cillian will be turning the big 3-6 on 25 May. We would like to invite all of you to participate in creating a one-of-a-kind birthday gift that will (hopefully!) be presented to Cillian in London next month. What we need from you is an email to editors@cilliansite.com containing the following: your favorite photo of Cillian, your favorite Cillian quote, favorite role, and something about yourself, i.e. how you became a fan and why, your country of origin, a photo of yourself if you would like, etc. These pages will be printed and bound in a beautiful book. The more the better!

The wonderful Myriam, who is graciously putting all of this together, also created a fan-made book for Jude Law, who was genuinely touched to receive such an amazing gift. Here are some examples to give you an idea of what we're looking for.

Example 1 | Example 2 | Example 3 | Example 4 | Example 5

We need your birthday wishes by 30 April to give Myriam plenty of time to get the book together! (Let's keep this respectful and tasteful. Nothing stalkerish will be included.)

Up close with Cillian in Clash

Clash magazine will feature Cillian in its May 2012 issue. The article graces us with a long-awaited new photoshoot (by Christian Oita), which makes interesting use of color and costume. In speaking with great enthusiasm about the upcoming London run of Enda Walsh's Misterman, which begins April 18, Cillian gives us hints as to the physical and mental toll that the role Thomas Magill takes upon him:

"I'm probably fitter than I've ever been in my life as a result. It has that incredible concentration and immersion that I love in any form of acting," he says, his almost boyish enthusiasm shining through. "With Misterman I'm generally so physically ruined at the end of it. I'm not complaining about that, I adore it but you do feel physically wrecked."

You can read the entire excerpt of the article here. May 2012 issue of Clash, on shelves April 5.

Red Lights gets a U.S. release date

American audiences will get a possible double-shot of Cillian this summer, with Red Lights to be released July 13, as reported by ShockTillYouDrop. That will land it a week before the July 20 release of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, in which Cillian is rumored to have reprised his villain Jonathan Crane, AKA Scarecrow. With Cillian's involvement in the latest Batman saga unconfirmed, it's good to know that a trip to the theater this summer is in order regardless; the wildly mixed reviews that Red Lights garnered at the Sundance Film Festival in January have generated worldwide anticipation for the film's release.

Thanks Tara, Pam and Charlotte for the pics!

First look at Broken + Cillian wins + more on Red Lights

Cillian Murphy in Broken

First look at Broken

ScreenTerrier.blogspot.com has given us a "First look at Broken" in their February 18 blog. The movie promises excitement and twists, as well as a stellar cast that includes Cillian, Tim Roth and newcomer Eloise Laurence. The film, currently in post-production, has an anticipated release date in 2013, giving us already something new from Cillian to look forward to next year. While Cillian's character is not revealed in the blog, an official synopsis of the film is given to tantalize us until the official trailer is released. Enjoy!

Cillian wins big

Not surprisingly, Cillian recently picked up the Best Actor award at The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards, held at Royal Hospital Kilmainham, in Dublin, Ireland, for his role as Thomas Magill in Misterman. Cillian was naturally humble and generous in his acceptance speech:

I only have two words for this really: Enda Walsh. Fifteen years ago he gifted me a career with his play Disco Pigs and 15 years later he gifted me the part of Thomas Magill in Misterman.
You can read more about the ceremony and awards here.

Red Lights interviewed and reviewed

Although I much prefer the English trailer since the Spanish trailer has Cillian's voice dubbed with a Spanish actor, in between parts of this Spanish trailer you can hear Cillian's speaking with a beautiful Irish lilt as he explains his attraction to Red Lights.

Red Lights gets a distributor + Misterman in London

Red Lights gets picked up

Not long after its Sundance premiere in Park City, Utah last month, Cillian's most recent project, Red Lights, found a distributor with Millenium Films. Though the studio hasn't yet announced a North American release date, you can find South American and European dates at IMDb.com. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, take a look below for the English version. You can view the Spanish version on YouTube here.

We've archived several reviews in our Press: Reviews section and you can see Cillian & crew at Sundance in our Gallery section.

Misterman is coming to London!

You asked for it and you got it! Misterman is making its London premiere on April 18th during London's National Theatre 2012-13 season. We'll let you know more about run dates as we get more information. On a very personal note, my husband and I were extremely fortunate to have seen Misterman in New York this past December. The play is a showcase of Cillian's extraordinary talent and should not be missed! If you can, go! If you do, make sure you let us know about your experience!

Thanks for the info, Sydney!

Red Lights debuts at Sundance + help wanted

Red Lights debuts

Cillian's latest film, Red Lights, screened for audiences at the Sundance film festival this week, and reactions to the thriller have been... well, kind of mixed. You'd think a movie about paranormal activity starring Cillian, Sigourney Weaver, Robert deFreakin'Niro and Olsen Sister of the Moment Elizabeth Olsen, with direction by Rodrigo Cortés, would be a slam dunk. But as these write ups on HitFix.com and MTV.com show, reviewers seem more confused than enthused.

Sundance screens films so they can find studio backing, which often means movies are edited and tweaked before release. Fingers are crossed that Red Lights will find distribution and soon we'll all be scratching our heads over this mysterious ending!

Help Wanted

The CillianSite is looking for someone to assist with coding blogs and archiving articles. Previous experience with html coding would be a plus, but not necessarily required. The ideal candidate would be someone who checks their email frequently or owns a smart phone, and is available on short notice to code and archive.

Salary depends on experience and performance, and will be paid in E-hugs, and general positive feelings from the rest of The CillianSite staff, not to mention an enormous amount of good karma. (You won't really be paid!) Interested candidates should send a brief email explaining their interest and background to editors@cilliansite.com.

Cillian as Best Actor?

IrishTimes.com has reported the shortlist for the Irish Times Theatre Awards for 2011. Making the list, which includes awards for best productions, writing, acting, directing, and design are Cillian for Best Actor as Thomas Magill in Misterman; and Misterman for Best Production. Misterman was written and directed by Enda Walsh, produced by Landmark Productions and Galway Arts Festival. Up against some tough competition, we will be pulling for Cillian to take home the Best Actor prize! You can see the other nominees here.

A year in review

Cillian Murphy

Happy New Year, friends! We'd like to take this time to reflect on this past year packed with great film and unparalleled theater from our favorite blue-eyed Irishman.

Cillian was busy working on developing projects during the first part of the year. In July, Irish theater fans were treated to the phenomenal stage presence of Cillian as Thomas Magill in Enda Walsh's one-man tour de force, Misterman.

It wasn't until October's limited release of Retreat, followed by the full theatrical release of In Time, that Cillian fans outside of Ireland were treated to his screen presence.

Cillian made his U.S. stage debut in November, reprising his role in Misterman, setting all-time records for St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York.

2011 proved to be just as exciting as anticipated!

This year we look forward to Red Lights, a paranormal/psychological thriller in which Cillian stars opposite Academy Award winners Robert de Niro and Sigourney Weaver.

Will fans get to see Cillian reprise his role as Scarecrow/Dr. Jonathan Crane in this summer's release of The Dark Knight Rises? Only time will tell!

Cillian as GQ's Best Dressed 2012?

Cillian needs your vote!!! GQ.com's Best Dressed Man 2012 contest is open for voting. The competition is stiff, but we think (and we're sure you'll agree) that there is no one more stylish than Cillian. Click here right now to cast your vote for the best looking guy of any year.

Much more Misterman

More Misterman love (and major spoilers)

Backstage.com joined in the major praise for Cillian and Misterman, but unlike every other review of the show, this one contains pivotal plot information—aka spoilers. If you are going to see the play, we suggest you read this review afterwards. (There are no quotes from Cillian to miss out on.) However, if you're not going to be able to see the play, you can find out more about it, including the ending (really, Backstage—the production goes through December!).

We're giving you one last spoiler alert before we give you the link, here. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Runaway hit has extended run

This just in from St. Ann's Warehouse: Misterman has been extended until December 22. There are still tickets left to see what Entertainment Weekly calls "The perfect paring of unorthodox playwright and fearless actor". St. Ann's also reports that Misterman had the largest advance ticket sale in the theater's history. If you're in the New York area, we say again: Go!

If you haven't been able to find the perfect seat for an upcoming performance of Misterman, you may be in luck. You can find one pair and several one-seat front row and center tickets for sale here.

More movie memorabilia

Did you check out all the Cillian-related movie props from one of our last posts? Here's a few more, for those who can afford to splurge!

Thanks Harley and Mattiekitty!

NY ♥s Misterman

Misterman

Misterman opened last week at St. Ann's Warehouse in New York, and critics are straining their thesauri to come up with superlatives to describe this unique theatrical experience—and Cillian's talent. Theatermania.com says Cillian gives a "blazingly raw performance", and The New York Times says that none of Cilly's previous performances "anticipate the dizzying breadth and concentration of this one." (We think they liked it.)

Cillian has also been doing interviews about the play, with Theatermania.com and this more detailed, revealing one with The Wall Street Journal.

If you're in the New York area, St. Ann's is having a "virtual rush" contest where you can win tickets for the way-low price of $25. Good luck!

Cillian movie props for sale

Tired of big box Black Friday holiday gifts? Looking for something REALLY special for the Cillian lover in your life (even if that's you)? Look no further. Just in time for the holidays, you can own a few small pieces of Cillian movie history. A surprising assortment of items is available now, from this eBay listing for one of the dresses he wore on screen in Peacock to the fictional airline "Fresh Airways" from Red Eye poster to the LED Space Suit Torch seen on screen in Sunshine. Depending on the item, the prices are within reach for the average
eccentric collector.

Thanks for the info, Harley!

Cillian Dazed (Again)

For a man who's said he doesn't like doing photo sessions, Cillian manages to look rather suave on this month's cover of Dazed and Confused Magazine. In the interview, Cillian talks about the pivotal play that got him into acting and the actor he chose as "Star of the Future," and he describes himself at age 15 as "a bit of a cock." He's far more politic when discussing his first appearance in D&C in 2006 (click here for a brief walk down memory lane).

Thanks for the pics, Corine!

In Time clips, articles (deja vu!), U.K. premiere + much more

Timekeeper Raymond Leon
See more In Time stills

Got time for a lot of In Time features? The movie has been getting a ton of media exposure, with varying degrees of Cillian. Timekeeper Raymond Leon would tell you that your time is valuable, so here's our guide (with rating system!) to the latest Cillian press on In Time: There's lots of Cillian clips from the movie with this interview. Rating: ***

Cillian explains his character and looks like he'd rather be doing anything else here: Rating: ** ½

This 23+ minute interview with BBC Radio Live gets an extra star for having video as well as audio, but they lose a star because the DJs banter so much that Cillian's more of an occasional participant to their meanderings about the end of Inception: Rating: **

In this interview, Cillian and Amanda Seyfried answer the question, "If you had two hours to live, what science fiction movie would you watch?" (Cillian's choice was interesting in that it's not strictly sci-fi.) Rating: **

Some of the same questions are posed in this interview, but with less Amanda Seyfried and and more animated answers from Cillian. Rating: *** And again, here. Rating: **

Here's the deja vu part. That interview also appeared as an article in The Herald.ie, and again here, and again, here! Average rating for all: **

The Guardian's take on Cillian gets an extra star for its interesting twist—they did the interview with his eyes. However, they lose a star for questions that apparently made those eyes glaze over, leaving Cillian at his guarded best. Rating: **

Those lucky enough to score tickets for the show at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York are sure to be amazed by Cillian's performance. Scarecrow a judge? + Retreat interviews + more Red Lights

Dr. Jonathan Crane

While we realize that things have seemed quiet on the surface, behind the scenes we've been hard at work archiving Reviews, Feature Stories, photos and more. Make sure to Like our Facebook page to get up to the minute updates on Cillian.

Is Scarecrow back?

Despite Cillian's adorable refusal to talk about the upcoming Batman movie in a radio interview with the Wittertainment Two, his IMDB bio page was recently updated giving us a hint that perhaps he may be reprising his role in the latest installment. In addition, IMDB has Cillian listed as a cast member for The Dark Knight Rises giving us a glimmer of hope that Cillian may indeed play our favorite Dr. Crane again. We also found some internet rumors on Hypable.com which claim that Dr. Crane/Scarecrow will be a judge in a Bane-ruled Gotham City. While we hope the rumors hold true, only time will tell since Cillian won't!

Retreat has limited opening in U.S.

A lucky few U.S. fans had the opportunity to see Retreat this past October as it opened in limited theatres across the U.S. Robert Beames interviewed the cast for WhatCulture.com where Cillian divulged that he was drawn to the script because of its sophisticated adult drama and interaction between his character and the character played by Thandie Newton. He also had praise for director Carl Tibbets, calling his first film a claustrophobic, character-driven film.

Cillian also had Q&A interviews with HeyUGuys.Co.UK! and The A.V. Club. You can read his descriptions of the movie, set, filming and what it was like to work with his director and fellow actors.

Red Lights plot thickens

Dread Central.com reports their delight in seeing their (and our) favorite actor looking "absolutely crazed" in the upcoming film, Red Lights. A bit more plot information and a gorgeous photo can be found on their site here.

More footage of Raymond Leon

io9.com has exclusive footage from upcoming In Time. In addition to clips featuring Will (Justin Timberlake) and Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried), you can watch a two-minute segment of nothing but Cillian as Timekeeper Raymond Leon! In it, Cillian also reveals more about his character and the movie. You can also view the clip here, on YouTube.

Fangirl Pisces has created her own Timekeeper Raymond Leon video which can also be seen on YouTube or below.

If The Dark Knight Rises, will The Scarecrow return?

Cillian may be reprising his role as Dr. Jonathan Crane, a.k.a. The Scarecrow, in The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan's next Batman movie. This item from What Culture! hints big that the rumor is true, and MovieWeb.com hints even harder that Cillian was spotted on the DKR set in a scene described on WorstPreviews.com. As Cillian is in Christopher Nolan's stable of favorite actors (along with Dark Knight co-star Thomas Hardy—the man has great taste), we're hoping for a little more Crane action!

Thanks for the info, Amber!

What was your first Cillian experience?

Earlier this month we asked our Facebook fans to tell us about the first time they discovered Cillian. The response has been fantastic! We love hearing Cilly's fans' stories and we'd love to hear yours too! Head over to our Facebook page (or leave a comment below!) and tell us in which short, play, or film you first discovered Cillian. When?

Suzanne has been kind to share her story here. Hopefully it will inspire you to share yours!

The first time I really noticed Cillian was when I saw him in Inception. But that was not the first time I'd seem him. The first time was Red Eye, back when I thought he was "Sillian" Murphy. I saw it on TV, and I didn't like him at all! I thought he was strange-looking, mostly because of those big, high cheek bones, I think. Plus, he was such a mean, creepy character. Then last July, I went to see Inception. In the movie when they opened the door to the room where he first appeared with his dying dad and he turned around, I thought: "There's that guy! Who is he?" I had gone from disliking him to being interested and intrigued. I made sure I knew his name, then when I went on my computer I started a search. It eventually led my to The CillianSite (It was still "sillian site" to me; I'm Irish, you'd think I'd know better.) Between your site and IMDb.com, I found out just about everything I wanted to know and more. And I loved your picture galleries. Before I knew it, I was hooked on Cillian Murphy (make that "Killian")! Now I own most of his movies. How could I ever not like this guy?

Just In Time for film's release: a lawsuit

Raymond Leon in In Time
See more In Time photos

Weeks before In Time, the futuristic thriller starring Cillian, Justin Timberlake, and Amanda Seyfried comes to your local multiplex, a lawsuit has been filed to halt the release. The suit was filed by Harlan Ellison, who wrote a science fiction story called "Repent, Harlequin! Said The Ticktockman" in 1965. (You can read about the short story here.) Ellison is asking for the movie to be pulled from its release date on October 28 and for all copies of it to be destroyed. This would not be great news for Cillian fans, though such suits usually end in settlements rather than heaps of burning celluloid. You can read more about the lawsuit here. Keep checking The CillianSite for the latest information!
